What Should I do if a Tooth Has Been Knocked Out?
If a tooth has been knocked out, it is important to take immediate action in order to increase the chances of successful re-implantation. Here are the steps you should take:
Locate the tooth: Look for the tooth and pick it up by the crown (the part of the tooth that is visible in the mouth), avoiding touching the root.
Clean the tooth: Gently rinse the tooth with water to remove any dirt or debris. Do not scrub the tooth or remove any attached tissue fragments.
Re-insert the tooth: Try to place the tooth back into the socket as soon as possible. Bite down gently to hold the tooth in place.
Keep it moist: If you are unable to re-insert the tooth, bring it with you to our office. Keep the tooth moist at all times until you can see us. Milk is the best option, but if not available, you can place the tooth in a container with saliva or water.
Seek dental attention: Call our office to make an appointment as soon as possible. The tooth should be re-implanted within 30 minutes of being knocked out for the best chances of success.
Pain management: Take over-the-counter pain medication as needed to manage pain and swelling.
